Girls’ Getaway in the Zambezi Region: 3 Countries, 8 Days, Endless Memories

Sometimes the best adventures happen when you least expect them. What started as a “let’s finally take that girls’ trip we keep talking about” turned into the most incredible 8-day journey through three African countries that changed how we see friendship, adventure, and what’s possible when you just say yes.

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking a girls’ trip that’s fun, budget-friendly, and full of adventure, let me to introduce you to the Zambezi Region, which combines Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia to offer one of Africa’s most thrilling travel destinations.

We did it in just 7 nights and 8 days, back and forth between three nations, and let me tell you: it was the best trip of our lives.

Picture this: thundering waterfalls that create their own weather systems, elephants casually crossing rivers while you sip cocktails on a sunset cruise, dancing until dawn in a town you’d never heard of six months ago, and swimming literally on the edge of one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls. This is a collection of stories you’ll be telling for years. The Magic of Multi-Country African Travel

Before I dive into our day-by-day adventure, let me paint you a picture of why the Zambezi Region is perfect for a girls’ getaway.

Unlike those typical beach resort trips, which have their place, don’t get me wrong, this region offers something most destinations can’t: the thrill of crossing international borders while staying within a relatively small geographic area.

Within a few hours’ drive, you’re experiencing completely different cultures, currencies, and countries, but the mighty Zambezi River that flows through them all makes everything seem connected.

It’s like getting three vacations in one, without the jet lag or massive travel days between destinations.

And here’s the best part: it’s surprisingly affordable. While many African safari destinations can cost thousands per person, the Zambezi Region offers world-class experiences at prices that won’t make your bank account weep.

We’re talking $50-100 per day including accommodation, meals, and activities. Yes, really.

🇿🇼 Days 1–2: Zimbabwe – The Party & The Falls

We kicked things off in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where we spent two nights. The moment we stepped off the plane, something shifted. Maybe it was the warm African air, the genuine smiles from locals, or simply the realisation that we had arrived in Africa.

Day 1: Victoria Falls Town Has a Heartbeat

After landing and checking into our guesthouse (more on accommodation tips in future posts), we explored the charming little town of Victoria Falls. And when I say charming, I mean it has this perfect mix of tourist infrastructure and authentic local life that makes you feel both comfortable and adventurous.

We started with lunch at a local spot recommended by our guesthouse host, where we had our first taste of sadza, a Zimbabwean staple food made from maize meal and realized that African cuisine was going to be a delightful surprise throughout our trip.

The portions were generous, the flavours bold, and our server taught us a few Shona phrases that we butchered adorably for the rest of the trip.

The afternoon was spent wandering through the town centre, visiting local markets, and getting our bearings.

What struck us immediately was how safe we felt. As a group of women traveling internationally, safety is always on our minds, but Victoria Falls has this wonderful small-town feel where locals genuinely want to help you have a great time.

But here’s where Day 1 got interesting: Victoria Falls has a nightlife scene, and we made the most of it!

We started with sunset drinks at the Victoria Falls Hotel’s terrace (splurge moment, but the views of the Zambezi River gorge were worth every penny), then moved to Shearwater Café for dinner and live music. By 10 PM, we found ourselves at Three Monkeys Bar, dancing to a mix of African beats and international hits until the early hours.

Dancing in Zimbabwe, surrounded by travellers from around the world and locals showing off their moves laughing until our cheeks hurt. We realised at this point that this trip would be special. There’s something about African music that gets into your soul and makes you move in ways you didn’t know you could.

Day 2: Victoria Falls – When Nature Shows Off

If Day 1 was about cultural connection and fun, Day 2 was about raw natural power that leaves you speechless.

Despite our late night, we managed to get up early and made our way to the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls National Park. Before you even see the falls, you can hear their thunderous, deep roar, which grows louder and more impressive with every step you take on the rainforest path that leads to them.

But nothing, and I mean nothing, prepares you for that first viewpoint.

Standing at the edge of the thundering cascades, watching rainbows form in the mist, feeling the spray on your face from hundreds of meters away, felt like stepping into a dream. No photo can ever do it justice, though trust me, we took hundreds trying.

The Zimbabwean side offers these incredible panoramic views where you can see the entire width of the falls. We spent the morning moving between viewpoints, each one revealing a different angle, a different perspective of this natural wonder.

The mist creates its own weather system, and at certain viewpoints, you get completely soaked, which is refreshing in the African heat.

Pro tip we learned: The morning light creates the most incredible rainbows in the mist. We saw double rainbows, triple rainbows, and at one point what looked like a complete rainbow circle. It was like nature was showing off specifically for us.

We had lunch at the Lookout Café, literally overlooking the falls, where we processed what we’d just experienced. There’s something about witnessing one of the world’s natural wonders with your best friends that bonds you in a different way.

We were witnesses to something ancient and potent, not merely tourists snapping pictures.

The afternoon was spent souvenir shopping in the town centre and preparing for our next adventure: crossing into Zambia.

🇿🇲 Days 3–6: Zambia – Adventure in Livingstone

On Day 3, we crossed into Zambia, and this is where our trip shifted from an amazing vacation to life-changing adventure.

Walking across the Victoria Falls Bridge while the Zambezi River roared below, getting our passports stamped, and formally entering our second country was an experience in and of itself.

There’s something thrilling about international borders, especially when you’re doing it with your best friends.

We settled into the energetic town of Livingstone and believe me when I say that adventure thrives here.

It’s difficult to explain Livingstone’s magnificent energy. It’s bigger than Victoria Falls town, with more of a bustling, authentic

African city vibe, but still completely manageable and safe for tourists. The local people are incredibly welcoming, the food scene is diverse and delicious, and there are adventure activities around every corner.

The Livingstone Adventure Menu

Over our four days in Zambia, we experienced activities that ranged from heart-pounding adrenaline rushes to soul-stirring cultural connections. Here’s what made Livingstone unforgettable:

🎨 Sip & Paint with Eric Miti

This was one of those experiences that caught us completely off guard with how meaningful it became. Eric Miti is a local artist who runs intimate painting sessions where you learn about Zambian art techniques while creating your own piece.

But this wasn’t just about painting—it was about storytelling. Eric shared the history of Zambian art, the significance of different symbols and colors in local culture, and his own journey as an artist. Meanwhile, we sipped local wine and painted scenes of African sunsets, animals, and landscapes.

What made it special was how personal it became. Each of us created something unique while learning about Zambian culture from someone who lives it every day. My painting was objectively terrible, but it now hangs in my living room as a reminder of this perfect afternoon in Livingstone.

🚤 Zambezi River Cruise – Magic Hour on the Water

The Zambezi River cruise was pure magic. Picture this: You’re on a comfortable boat, cocktail in hand, slowly cruising one of Africa’s most famous rivers as the sun begins to set. The landscape is breathtaking—wide river, lush islands, dramatic cliffs—but then the wildlife starts appearing.

Hippos popping their heads up to check out the boat (they’re surprisingly curious and playful). Crocodiles sunbathing on riverbanks. Elephants coming down to the water’s edge to drink. Birds everywhere—fish eagles, kingfishers, herons. It’s like a living nature documentary, except you’re actually there.

But the real magic happens during sunset. The African sky turns into this canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, reflected perfectly in the calm river water. We were all quiet for a moment, just taking it in, when someone said, “I can’t believe this is our actual life right now.”

The cruise operators know how to make it special—they have photographers who capture the perfect shots, they know exactly where to find the animals, and they time everything perfectly so you’re heading back as the stars start appearing.

💦 Devil’s Pool – Swimming on the Edge of the World

Okay, this one requires its own section because it’s absolutely insane and absolutely incredible.

Devil’s Pool is a natural swimming hole right on the edge of Victoria Falls. During certain times of the year when the water levels are just right, you can literally swim to the edge of one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls.

The experience starts with a boat ride to Livingstone Island, then a short hike over rocks to reach the pool. Your guide (who has done this thousands of times) explains the safety procedures, helps you into the water, and guides you to the edge.

Swimming in Devil’s Pool is surreal. You’re in this calm, natural pool, and then suddenly you’re looking over the edge at a 100-meter drop with the full force of the Zambezi River rushing past you. The guides hold onto you (they’re incredibly experienced), but there’s still this moment of “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

The photos are incredible, but the feeling is indescribable. It’s terrifying and exhilarating and peaceful all at once. Not everyone in our group chose to do it (and that’s totally fine—it’s definitely not for everyone), but those who did said it was one of the most memorable experiences of their lives.

🏞 Zambian Side of Victoria Falls – A Different Perspective

While the Zimbabwean side offers panoramic views, the Zambian side gets you up close and personal with the falls. The walking trails take you right to the base of the falls, where you can feel the full power and get completely soaked by the spray.

The experience is more intimate and immersive. You get to be part of the ecosystem. The rainforest around the falls is lush and green from the constant mist, there are unique plants and birds, and the sound is absolutely overwhelming in the best possible way.

We spent an entire morning exploring the different trails and viewpoints, each offering something unique. The knife-edge bridge gives you views straight down the gorge, while the boiling pot trail takes you to where the river exits the falls and continues its journey toward the Indian Ocean.

🦁 Game Drives – African Wildlife in Their Natural Home

The game drives around Livingstone exceeded all our expectations. We chose Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a morning drive, and it was like stepping into a nature documentary.

Within the first hour, we spotted giraffes gracefully moving through acacia trees, zebras grazing in groups, and various antelope species. But the real excitement came when we encountered a small herd of elephants, including babies, just a few meters from our vehicle.

Watching elephants in the wild is emotional in a way you don’t expect. They’re so intelligent, so family-oriented, so gentle despite their massive size. We watched a mother elephant teaching her baby to use its trunk, and honestly, there wasn’t a dry eye in our vehicle.

The landscape itself is stunning—vast savanna dotted with distinctive African trees, dramatic lighting, and this sense of endless space that you can’t experience anywhere else in the world.

🏡 Mukuni Village – Authentic Cultural Connection

Visiting Mukuni Village was one of the most meaningful parts of our entire trip. This is a living village where the local Leya people maintain their traditional way of life while welcoming visitors to learn about their culture.

Our guide, a village elder, walked us through different areas of the village, explaining traditional building techniques, showing us how various crafts are made, and sharing stories about Leya customs and beliefs. We watched women weaving baskets, learned about traditional medicines, and saw how families organize their daily lives.

But what made it special wasn’t just learning about the culture—it was the genuine connections we made. Children followed us around, teaching us games and laughing at our attempts to speak Tonga. Adults shared stories and asked about our lives back home. There was this beautiful moment of human connection that transcended language and cultural barriers.

We contributed to the village fund and bought some handmade crafts, but more importantly, we left with a deeper understanding of Zambian culture and appreciation for different ways of living.

🛍 Markets & Museums – Livingstone’s Stories

Livingstone’s markets are an adventure in themselves. The main market is this bustling maze of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to traditional crafts to modern goods. The energy is incredible—vendors calling out, people negotiating prices, the sound of different languages mixing together.

We learned the art of respectful bargaining (it’s expected and part of the fun), tried fruits we’d never seen before, and found unique souvenirs that actually mean something. The vendors are generally patient with tourists and enjoy the interaction as much as the sale.

The Livingstone Museum provided important historical context about the area, including its role in exploration and colonization. It helped us understand the significance of the region beyond just its natural beauty.

Throughout our four days in Livingstone, we were struck by how budget-friendly everything was. Excellent meals cost $10-15, activities were reasonably priced, and accommodation was comfortable without being expensive. It’s possible to have incredible experiences without spending a fortune.

🇧🇼 Day 7: Botswana – Safari in Chobe National Park

After four adventure-packed days in Zambia, we hopped on a shuttle to Kasane, Botswana, for what would become the perfect finale to our trip.

The journey to Botswana was an adventure in itself. Crossing another international border, seeing the landscape gradually change, and arriving in the small but bustling town of Kasane where everything revolves around Chobe National Park.

Kasane has this frontier town energy—it’s clearly built for safari tourism, but it retains this authentic African atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re about to embark on a real adventure.

One Magical Night, Two Unforgettable Experiences

We had planned just one night in Botswana, which might seem rushed, but it turned out to be perfect. Sometimes less time makes you more present, more aware that every moment is precious.

🛶 Chobe River Boat Cruise – Front Row Seats to Wildlife Paradise

The Chobe River boat cruise was unlike anything we’d experienced in Zambia or Zimbabwe. Chobe National Park has the highest concentration of elephants in Africa, and the river cruise puts you right in the middle of their world.

Within minutes of leaving the dock, we were surrounded by wildlife. Elephants were at the everywhere, some drinking, some crossing the river, and others in the shallows.  At one point, a herd of about 30 elephants, including several babies, crossed directly in front of our boat. They moved with such purpose and grace, and the babies stayed close to their mothers, occasionally trumpeting with excitement.

We saw hippos creating their own social dramas, crocodiles perfectly still until they suddenly weren’t, and an incredible variety of birds. The landscape was different too—more dramatic, with baobab trees and African fish eagles calling from the banks.

The golden sunset over the Chobe River was hands-down one of the most beautiful things we’d ever seen. The light in Africa during golden hour is unlike anywhere else—it’s warm and rich and makes everything look like a painting. We were all quiet, just absorbing the beauty and the reality that this was our actual life in this moment.

🚙 Chobe Game Drive – Living Safari Documentary

The next morning’s game drive was the perfect culmination of our entire trip. Chobe National Park is famous for its wildlife density, and it lived up to every expectation.

Our guide was incredible—he could spot animals from distances that seemed impossible and knew exactly where to position our vehicle for the best views and photos. Within the first 30 minutes, we’d seen lions, buffalo, various antelope species, and more elephants than we could count.

But the real magic was the ecosystem interactions we witnessed. We watched lions stalking buffalo (from a very safe distance), saw different animal species coexisting peacefully, and observed behaviors that you only see in nature documentaries.

The landscape of Chobe is stunning—vast floodplains, distinctive African trees, and this sense of endless wild space that puts everything into perspective. It’s raw and beautiful and exactly what you picture when you think “African safari.”

At one point, our guide stopped the vehicle and turned off the engine so we could just listen to the sounds of the African bush. It was this perfect moment of silence broken only by distant animal calls and the wind through the trees.

🛫 Day 8: Farewell, But Never Goodbye

Our final morning in Kasane was bittersweet. As we packed our bags and prepared for our flight home, we were all processing what we’d just experienced.

The Zambezi Region had given us waterfalls that create their own weather systems, wildlife encounters that felt like privileges, cultural connections that expanded our worldview, and adventures that pushed us out of our comfort zones in the best possible way.

But more than that, it had given us stories and experiences that became part of who we are. We returned home different people—more confident, more open to adventure, more connected to each other and to the incredible diversity of our planet.

The next day, we packed up with hearts full of joy and thousands of memories. We’d accomplished something that seemed impossible eight days earlier: we’d traveled through three African countries, experienced some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders, connected with local cultures, and had the time of our lives while staying within our budget.
